Necessity is the Mother of Invention
In 2008, our founder Janelle Fitzpatrick needed a way to keep her dogs and baby off her curved banisters and extra-wide stairs. The options on the market were neither attractive, nor 100 percent safe given the jerry-rigging required to attach the gate between banisters. As is the case with many products on the market today, necessity was the mother of invention. Janelle designed a solution that could be safely secured to her banisters and looked good when she walked through the door. After years of friends and family telling her she should start a business selling the fabric stair gates she'd invented, she took the leap of faith and launched The Stair Barrier in 2015.
The Stair Barrier now offers three unique stair gate solutions for parents who do not want to choose between safety and style.
The Stair Barrier Wall to Wall Single Panel Swing Gate features a hand-constructed fabric slipcover on the exterior and Cardinal Gate’s Stairway Special (Model SS-30) on the interior. Launched in 1993, the Stairway Special is constructed with aluminum and features a latch system that allows for one-hand operation and installs at angles up to 30 degrees allowing the location of a stud when mounting on drywall. These safety features are complemented by The Stair Barrier’s signature upholstery grade fabric slipcover cover, which eliminates children’s view of the stairs, and the temptation to climb, and helps the gate blend seamlessly into a home’s décor.
Designed for maximum safety at the top of a stairway, but perfect for all areas, the Wall to Wall Single Panel Swing Gate is 29 ½” tall and adjustable from 27″ to 42 ½” wide.
The Stair Barrier’s Wall to Banister and Banister to Banister stair gates are the only gates on the market specifically designed for installation on banisters. Constructed with Class 1 Upholstery grade fabric on the exterior and rigid plastic struts and horizontal webbing on the interior, Stair Barriers can be installed on an angle and attached to banisters of all shapes and sizes. A great option for hard-to-gate stairs, the unique design of our baby and pet gates also provides added safety benefits: the fabric eliminates the view of the stairs and the vertical struts make our gates extremely difficult to climb. Without the temptation of the stairs and the horizontal bars to use as leverage, Stair Barriers help prevent the most common types of gate-related injuries. Stair Barriers are rigorously tested and meet the General and Performance Requirements of ASTM F1004, Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Expansion Gates and Expandable Enclosures.
